Dear Advocates:
I am thrilled to participate as the Honorary National Runner for ADAPT's 2008 National Fun Run. Over the past 25 years, ADAPT has been a vibrant part of the Chicago Community. Blocking buses, hosting demonstrations and filing a lawsuit against the Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago ADAPT spearheaded the movement in the mid 1980's to make Mainline Public Transportation accessible in Chicago. As a result, every mainline bus now has a chair lift. During my days as a founder and former President of the National Council on Independent Living, and chairperson of the National Council on Disability, ADAPT was always there, leading the direct action campaigns that have been so critical to our community's progress.
Today, ADAPT chapters around the country continue to create more opportunities for people with disabilities to live in communities of their choice and to reverse the government's traditional institutional bias. As leaders in the disability movement age, ADAPT is cultivating new members into the movement, preparing people for the struggles ahead. Especially now, as the United States transitions into a new administration, it is critical for ADAPT's voice to be strong.
With a contribution to the 2008 Fun Run, you will make a difference in so many ways, from helping to cover the costs of transportation, rooms and food at National Actions, to supporting the costs of accommodations at the National Youth Summit. Please join my efforts to ensure that ADAPT's voice remains strong for generations to come.
Thank you,
Marca
